Chetana

Chetana is an Occupational and Rehabilitation Training Centre based at Sirsi taluk in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka. The centre was started in 2005 in a very small way to address the needs of differently-abled people. There were no such centres in and around Sirsi, as a result of which these individuals were spending all their time at their respective homes. During the initial stages, the beneficiaries were taught to make small paper envelopes. Over the next couple of years, the number of people in the organisation slowly grew. Now at Chetana differently-abled people make not just paper bags, but also banana fibre files, boxes, pen stands, belt, photo frames and jewelery boxes. All the products are eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable. Working at the centre, not only gives the individuals economic empowerment, but also an opportunity to interact with others like themselves.
